Pete H. Rea Memorial Golf Tournament - 34 Years of Fitzgibbon Hospital Support

July 17, 2025

In 1991, or 34 years ago, it was an exciting time for our community. Fitzgibbon Hospital prepared to open its new facility at its current location on South Highway 65.  The former hospital facility served the community well since it had opened nearly 70 years earlier, but the time for a state-of-the-art facility had come. And the community embraced it.

In the days between a gala open house to show off the new facility and tours for both community members and donors, the first Fitzgibbon Hospital Golf Tournament was held. The tournament was so popular it became an annual event that would eventually be re-named the Pete H. Rea Memorial Golf Tournament. The re-naming was in memoriam of longtime Fitzgibbon Hospital Board of Trustee President Pete H. Rea, who had passed away during this time.

Fast-forward to 2025. This year marks the 34th annual golf tournament which has been held at Indian Foothills Golf Course and boasting prizes on every hole. The tournament has been an 18-hole tournament for many years.

“This golf tournament has been such an important part of making a difference for Fitzgibbon Hospital. The energy around this tournament from the many men and women in our community coming together for a common goal is the reason why this tournament continues to be successful for so many years,” said Angy Littrell, President and CEO of Fitzgibbon Hospital.  “This is one of those events that we all look forward to each and every year.”

This year’s tournament, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2, at Indian Foothills Golf Course, will feature only one morning flight to accommodate up to 54 three-person teams, as well as hole prizes which include a $10,000 hole-in-one cash prize. There will also be many additional prizes and complimentary gifts for players.

Co-directors for the 2024 tournament are Lisa McComas and Susan Pointer. Both have participated in the Fitzgibbon Hospital Golf Tournament as golfers in the past.

Over the last 34 years, proceeds have supported various capital improvement projects, from the construction of the new Emergency Department with FastTrack services, the linear accelerator radiation therapy unit, used in the Fitzgibbon Community Cancer Center, and the 3D Mammography equipment to detect breast cancer. This year’s proceeds will help offset the cost of a recent endoscope upgrade used to provide colonoscopies and other GI related procedures used by Yan Chen, MD and Roy Elfrink, MD.
