Residents of Saline County and surrounding communities have a new orthopedic surgeon available for specialized care at Fitzgibbon Hospital. His last name - or perhaps even his face - may be known to some. Jacob Elfrink, M.D., who grew up in Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School, has returned home to join Fitzgibbon Orthopedic and Sports Medicine in Marshall. Most importantly, he joins his father, Roy Elfrink, M.D., general surgeon, in the cadre of surgical professionals ready to serve patients in the area.
Dr. Elfrink brings a diverse and comprehensive educational training to his practice. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia in May 2020, where he also completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery. His academic journey began with earning a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, Cal., in 2012. He then travelled to Newcastle, England, where he earned a Diploma of Higher Education in Medical Sciences from North Umbria University in 2016.
“This arrival of Dr. Jacob Elfrink back to his community to practice alongside his dad and to continue the Elfrink legacy of excellent patient care is a long time coming,” said Angy Littrell, President and CEO of the independent, not-for-profit hospital. “It is a ‘feel-good’ story for all of us, and we have anticipated Dr. Elfrink returning home for a long time. We are glad to finally have him on board.”
The addition of Dr. Elfrink represents a homecoming of sorts for Fitzgibbon Hospital, as he comes from a distinguished medical family with deep ties to the institution and to the Saline County area. His father, Roy Elfrink, M.D., has served as a longtime general surgeon at Fitzgibbon Hospital, while his mother, Melanie Elfrink, M.D., worked as a hospitalist at the facility before her retirement. Prior to that she was a primary care physician in Marshall. This medical legacy continues with Dr. Jacob Elfrink's specialization in orthopedic surgery, bringing advanced musculoskeletal and fracture care to the community.
Dr. Elfrink is board-eligible in orthopedic surgery and holds a permanent medical license from the Missouri Board of Healing Arts. Longtime orthopedic surgeon who has been affiliated with Fitzgibbon Hospital for several years, Richard White, M.D., will be mentoring Dr. Elfrink as he begins his career at Fitzgibbon. Dr. White was a professor at the University of Missouri Medical School and actually trained many of the individuals who worked with Dr. Elfrink during his residency and education.
“Marshall and the surrounding areas have a great opportunity to benefit from Dr. Elfrink’s wealth of training in orthopedic surgery that he received from University Hospital. I am excited for the opportunity to assist in mentoring him and practicing alongside,” said Dr. White.
Dr. Elfrink's orthopedic surgery training encompassed the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of conditions affecting bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles. He also will be working alongside Miles Romney, P.A., who is a physician assistant specializing in orthopedic care; he also holds an osteoporosis clinic periodically inside Marshall Family Practice.
Patients seeking orthopedic care for sports injuries, joint problems, fractures and other musculoskeletal conditions will benefit from Dr. Elfrink's specialized training and commitment to providing quality care close to home. His arrival eliminates the need for many patients to travel to larger metropolitan areas for orthopedic surgical services.
Fitzgibbon Hospital continues its mission of providing comprehensive healthcare services to central Missouri residents with the addition of Dr. Elfrink's specialized expertise.
