You’re not mistaken. You are starting to see pink pop up around town. That’s because pink is the color signifying breast cancer awareness.
With October as the official Breast Cancer Awareness month, activities and events to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer will begin by mid-September. This year marks the 12th annual area campaign, spearheaded by Fitzgibbon Hospital staff, to draw attention to the importance of breast and other cancer screening.
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer in women; skin cancer is first. Efforts to bring attention to the need for early detection via mammogram are paying off, as more women are receiving mammograms and discovering their cancers while they are still treatable. Additionally, research has allowed for the invention of new technologies, such as 3D Mammography. This advanced technology, which has been proved to reduce false positives of breast cancer and leads to even earlier detection, is now available at Fitzgibbon Hospital.
A month-long, community-wide focus on cancer prevention and treatment, known as Pink Out, helps residents in the communities served by the Fitzgibbon Community Cancer Center learn more about not only breast cancer but other forms of cancer as well. Another goal of Pink Out is to encourage early detection and to disseminate information about the treatment capabilities available to them at the Community Cancer Center.
