Celebrating Survivors:  Survivor Stories

Kristie Price felt a number of different emotions when she heard about the possibility of a state-of-the-art cancer facility being built on the Fitzgibbon Hospital campus. Kristie's story

From Marie Benham
Anyone who knows my husband can relate to the fact that I have always seen him as our family’s solid rock. We saw this rock become very fragile when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Making it through surgery was the easy part. It was the six weeks of daily radiation therapy that was traumatic.  Marie's Story

In 1986, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.  At age 21, the summer between my junior and senior year in college, Cheryl (Eckhoff) Lines began a labor of love in driving her mom and sometimes another patient on the trek to Columbia for her treatments of chemotherapy and radiation.  Cheryl's Story

Four years ago, Bob Shelton remembers waiting in his urologist’s office for the result of his biopsy for prostate cancer. Bob had a long list of questions for the doctor that related to the assumption that the biopsy would be negative. He learned in a few minutes that no matter how well you are prepared, hearing the doctor’s words – “Your biopsy was positive; you have cancer” – is devastating. Bob's Story

Christie Boedeker remembers the date – April 22, 2001 – just after her thirty ninth birthday when she found a soft lump in her right breast that “felt like a jelly bean.”  She wasn’t surprised when a mammogram was negative because “everybody knows that breast cancer is hard as a rock.”  Christie's Story

Rose Mary Lewis:  I was so excited when my daughter, Stacy Lawrence, told me that Marshall would seen be the home of a Cancer Center.  The community of Marshall will truly be fortunate to have such a provider in their midst.  Rose Mary's Story

Jack E. Tatom Jr. was diagnosed four years ago with oral cancer.  Jack's Story
